Porte Parole is the leading producer of documentary theatre in Canada and one of the country’s most innovative hubs for social dialogue. Based in Montreal and led by playwright Annabel Soutar, the Company’s plays have toured around Quebec and across Canada to great acclaim since 2000.

Porte Parole produces original plays in English and French that invite diverse audiences to reflect boldly on the big topics of our time. The Company relishes opportunities to turn complex social conflicts into deeply human stories that trigger life-changing conversations for Canadian citizens.

In Montreal, Porte Parole’s plays have been performed at the Place des Arts, the Centaur Theatre, the Segal Centre for the Performing Arts, Théâtre La Licorne, Théâtre Denise-Pelletier, Usine C and within the official programming of the Festival TransAmériques (FTA). Recently, the Company’s work has exploded beyond Montreal and Quebec, Sexy béton toured around the province in 2011 and will be adapted into a feature film in 2016. The Company’s acclaimed production Seeds has toured twice around Canada to five different provinces, attracting over 35,000 audience members and rave media reviews. Seeds was nominated in 8 categories at the Montreal English Theatre Awards (METAs), and Canadian icon Eric Peterson received the META for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in his role as Percy Schmeiser.

The Watershed, Annabel Soutar’s acclaimed play about water politics in Canada, starring Eric Peterson and Kristen Thompson, directed by Chris Abraham, and co-produced with Crow’s Theatre, premiered at Toronto’s PanAm/Para- Pan Games in July 2015, and was translated into French and presented at the world renowned Usine C in November 2015. In 2016-17, The Watershed will be remounted in 5 cities across Canada.

Recent French productions, Fredy directed by Marc Beaupré, and J’aime Hydro, created in collaboration with actress Christine Beaulieu, took Montreal by storm last season at La Licorne and in the 2016 edition of the FTA, and solidified Porte Parole’s francophone fan base in Quebec.

This season Annabel Soutar will start work on a new documentary play and podcast series called Énergie East about TransCanada’s bid to build a pipeline from Alberta to the Maritimes. Her research will be performed partially in public while she is an artist-in-residence at Usine C in Montreal.
