    What is a Relaxed Performance?

We want everyone to feel safe and welcomed when coming to see the show. We recognize that traditional theatre etiquette is too restrictive for many people. A laid-back environment offers a more dynamic theatrical experience where people can enjoy the show at their comfort level.

A Relaxed Performance is a theatrical event that’s designed to be more accessible and welcoming for a wider range of audience members. Relaxed Performances are often adapted for people with disabilities, neurodivergence, or sensory sensitivities. They can also be good for families, first-time theatregoers, or anyone else who prefers a more relaxed environment.

At a Relaxed Performance, audience members can be relaxed and be their natural selves. In this judgement-free “no-shushing” environment, audience members can move in and out of the space, laugh as loudly or quietly as they please, and move around and fidget. There is also a “chill-out zone” in the lobby for those who might need to take a break from the show, if they are too overstimulated.

    Who are Relaxed Performances for?

These performances are designed to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. This could include people on the Autism spectrum, people with sensory and communication disorders, anxiety, chronic pain, people who need to fidget and ask questions, families, and many more.

How does the show change at a Relaxed Performance?

A true Relaxed Performance modifies technical elements of the production to reduce sensory intensity. This might include reducing the intensity of lighting and sound, or making changes to emotionally or physically intense scenes. As well, information about what will happen during the show is made available in advance. This could be provided in a visual story posted online and/or in a pre-show introduction.

Not all Relaxed Performances have the same elements so we’ve put together a quick checklist so you can know what to expect at a Gateway Theatre Relaxed Performance.
