All students interested in joining Musical Theatre Performance (MTP) are required to audition.

These auditions are NOT a test of performance experience level, but a way for us to observe two things:

  1. A student’s interest and enthusiasm in learning material
  2. A student’s ability to work with an ensemble of a wider age range

What should I prepare?

    1. The first 1:10 minutes of “Tomorrow” from the musical Annie (a pianist will be playing the music for you at the audition). It must be memorized!
    2. A photo: Any picture that shows you from the bottom of your shoulders to the top of your head will do. We want a picture that looks like you – so a selfie is just fine.
    3. A list of your performing/public speaking experience including dance or music training, Gateway class experience, school shows or anything else you’d like us to know about you.

Gateway Academy – Musical Theatre Performance FAQs

  • How old should I be to audition?

This class is open to students aged 11-18.

  • Do I need to have experience in theatre?

Previous experience is helpful but not required to join this class. Commitment to learning material (songs, choreography, script), and an ability to work with students whose ages and experiences may be different than yours, however, is essential!

  • Do we need a professional headshot?

Nope! Any picture that shows you from the bottom of your shoulders to the top of your head will do. We want a picture that looks like you – so a selfie is just fine.

  • Do we need a professional resume?

No, just list your performing/public speaking experience including dance or music training, Gateway class experience, or anything else you’d like us to know about you. This can be in the body of the email or attached a separate document listing your experience.

  • Do I need to bring a hard copy of my picture and resume to my audition?

Nope, the digital copy that you send us will suffice.

  • Do I need to stay for the entire audition period?

No, you will be invited for a specific five to ten-minute slot within the day. Please keep in mind that sometimes we run a bit behind, so budget an extra 10 or so minutes in case that happens. However, everyone will be required to attend the dance call. (The exact time will be determined closer to July 14)

  • When should I arrive?

Ten minutes before your slot should do nicely.

  • Where do I enter?

The Studio Lobby door, which is on the side of Gateway closest to Minoru Chapel. There will be signs to direct you. Parents and chaperones are welcome to come into the lobby and wait with their youth, but will not be permitted within the audition room.

  • What does an audition look like?

Just like in professional auditions, the performer will go into the audition room where there will be the director and maybe one or two other people present. The performer will be invited to perform their poem and sing their song. The director or someone else might ask a few questions as well to get to know the performer better.

  • What does a dance call look like?

This will look more similar to a class or camp. All people who are auditioning will come in and
learn a short combination together, and then they will perform that combination in smaller groups so everyone has a chance to shine! No one will have to dance on their own!

  • Any tips?

Even though auditioning can make some people nervous, everyone in the audition room is there see you shine. If you start to feel nervous remember to breathe. If you stumble on a word or line, don’t worry – we’ve all been there! Just pause and take a breath and keep going. If you blank partway through your song or poem it’s okay to go back and start again too!
