In life, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a frequent wheelchair-user. Recognizing that the actor cast in the role does not have that lived experience, and because that aspect of the character is not crucial to the telling of this story,

Gateway Theatre has decided that FDR will not be depicted using a wheelchair.

FROM JOSH EPSTEIN

Working on Annie has been one of those rare creative experiences that follows you home, literally. I have my own exuberant young kids at home, and for the last few months these songs have been ricocheting through my house at full volume. They sing them with total abandon, they groove with the “bad people,” (AKA Hannigan and Rooster) and they carry just as much wild, unfiltered hope as Annie herself. It has reminded me every day why this story lasts, because its optimism is active, not naïve. Annie chooses hope. Again and again.

Revisiting this musical, what struck me most is its core truth. We all want a place where we can love, and be loved in return. That transformation never comes from spectacle; it comes from connection, from real people making real choices. So we approached this production with a simple challenge: don’t sell the show. Discover it. Let honesty lead.

It became especially meaningful to explore the character of Warbucks with Charlie. Warbucks is a man who has lived almost entirely for himself, who decides to move heaven and earth to find Annie’s parents, even though it may mean losing her. That choice cracks him open. It reveals the deeper theme of the story, that sometimes you have to make room in your life for love, and then you have to allow yourself to receive it. Annie teaches him that, and in doing so, she teaches all of us.

We built every element with that intention. Nicol’s thrilling choreography, Sean’s empathetic musical direction, Donnie’s vivid costumes, Ryan’s transformative sets, evocative sounds by Matthew, and Sophie’s illuminating lighting all reach for humanity rather than nostalgia, and their work is stunning. People often remember the sparkle of this musical, but what moved us in revisiting it were the stakes beneath it, the humour shaped by hardship, and the courage it takes to open your heart.

What I hope you feel tonight is not just nostalgia, but possibility, that optimism can be chosen, love can surprise you, and your chosen family, whoever they may be, might already be closer than you think.

FROM BARBARA TOMASIC

Welcome to Gateway Theatre and Annie, our annual Holiday Musical!

On behalf of our staff, board and volunteers I want to thank you for supporting live theatre here in Richmond. Gateway Theatre has been producing our holiday musical for 40 years, and Annie was one of the first shows to grace our Mainstage in 1984. Since then many emerging artists, myself included, have had their first opportunities on the holiday musical, and launched their professional careers here at Gateway. As we look toward the future, we remain committed to nurturing the next generation of theatre artists, and this has inspired us to start our Creative Associate and Emerging Artists program. Your support will ensure that new talent continues to grow and thrive on our stage, so please consider purchasing a ticket to our first annual Holiday Raffle! If you’re able, a donation of any size also helps sustain the programs that uplift emerging artists all year long.

We are so proud to be a place where you can celebrate with friends, family and your community.

Thank you again for finding yourself here.
