REFLECTIONS IN TIME • 2017-2018 Season

Welcome to Gateway Theatre’s 2017-2018 Season.

This season, our four MainStage shows will reflect upon stories from the past. And, in looking back in time, these plays hold up a mirror to our lives today and provide a glimpse of what our future might be.

This year, we will transport you back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. From turn-of-the-century Sweden to Dickensian London to 1926 Newfoundland to old colonial Hong Kong, our plays will dazzle you with imaginative designs, sumptuous costumes, and storytelling at its best.

Although our plays are all rooted in history, the themes and ideas explored are timely and relevant. This season we open with the Tony Award Winning Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, A Little Night Music. Our presentation of Salt-Water Moon takes a classic Canadian play and reimagines it in a spare and romantic setting that feels quite modern. My own play Nine Dragons is set in 1920s Hong Kong but speaks to current questions about identity and race. Finally, A Christmas Carol combines Victorian elements with modern flourishes – the result is a family-friendly spectacle for today’s Lower Mainland. Our studio shows offer a hilarious take on life with the return of a Gateway favourite Beverley Elliott in her latest production Sink or Swim and I Lost My Husband by Catherine Léger which is a smart, feisty, subversive comedy about the important things in life: love, freedom and karaoke.

In many ways A Christmas Carol is emblematic of the upcoming season. In this play, Ebenezer Scrooge relives his past in order to understand his current existence. That’s a terrific metaphor for the plays you will enjoy this season: they are reflections in time where the past is a looking glass for what’s to come.
