YEAR-LONG THEATRE CLASSES

Ages: 6–18 • Gateway Academy classes running from September to April
All classes are taught by our Gateway Academy instructors who are all professional working artists. 

2017-2018 Year-Long Theatre Classes:

ACTING 
 

INTRODUCTION TO ACTING • Ages 6-7
Sept 21, 2017 - Apr 19, 2018 (24 classes) • $300
Thursday 4:00-5:00pm

This introductory level class for our youngest students focuses largely on creative play as a means to tell stories. Basic skills such as sharing ideas, listening, giving, and taking attention are introduced. This class also introduces ensemble work, so that students develop a comfort at this capacity for future levels. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

ACTING LEVEL A • Ages 8-10
Sept 21, 2017 - Apr 19, 2018 (24 classes) • $480
Thursday 5:15-6:45pm

This project-based class offers students a safe environment in which to explore their self-expression through different forms of storytelling. They will learn how to use their bodies and voices effectively by combining creative play with fundamental acting skills. Basic script work is introduced. This class further promotes ensemble work amongst students. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

ACTING LEVEL B • Ages 10-13
Sept 21, 2017 - Apr 19, 2018 (24 classes) • $625
Thursday 7:00-9:00pm

Continuing their discoveries in vocal and physical expression, this age group is ready to tackle scene-work and monologues. Projects throughout the year take students deeper into understanding character development, environment, and action. Experience in basic script analysis and acting techniques prepares them for the rehearsal process offered in Acting C. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

ACTING LEVEL C • Ages 13-18
Sept 17, 2017 - Apr 22, 2018 (24+ classes) • $775
Sunday 1:00-5:00pm

This class is ideal for those who have already received some acting training. Skills are gained in acting techniques, script analysis, ensemble-building and character development (cognitive and physical), which are applied immediately to the rehearsal process of a chosen script. The students are cast according to their individual needs for growth, providing an environment for a successful learning experience.


MUSICAL THEATRE
 

INTRODUCTION TO MUSICAL THEATRE • Ages 6-7
Sept 16, 2017 - Apr 21, 2018 (24 classes) • $375
Saturday 9:00-10:30am

This introductory level class for our youngest students focuses largely on separately practicing the skills required in acting, dancing and singing. Students learn songs from popular musicals, and practice physical clarity while incorporating practiced dance steps. Fundamental acting skills are gained as they engage in ensemble-building and theatre exercises. 

MUSICAL THEATRE LEVEL A • Ages 8-10
Sept 19, 2017 - Apr 17, 2018 (24 classes) • $490
Tuesday 5:00-6:30pm

In this entry level class, students will focus on learning selections from a book musical. They’ll strengthen their acting skills and build ensemble through acting exercises, while continuing to incorporate the elements of singing and dancing into storytelling. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

MUSICAL THEATRE LEVEL B • Ages 10-13
Sept 19, 2017 - Apr 17, 2018 (24 classes) • $630
Tuesday 6:45-8:45pm

This class goes deeper into the discipline of musical theatre as a form of storytelling. Using the material from a book musical, students flesh out the arc of the story, exploring a character's journey through song and dance. As they apply ensemble-building and acting technique, this class prepares them for the rehearsal process offered in Musical Theatre C. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

MUSICAL THEATRE LEVEL C • Ages 13-18
Sept 20, 2017 - April 18, 2018 (24+ classes) • $775
Wednesday 5:00-9:00pm

This class is ideal for those who have experienced some previous training. Skills are gained in acting technique, script analysis, ensemble-building, singing, and dancing. Training is applied immediately to the rehearsal process of a book musical. The students are cast according to their individual needs for growth, providing an environment for a successful learning experience.

VOICE: SINGING LEVEL A • Ages 8-10
September 16, 2017–April 21, 2018 (24 classes) • $340
Saturday 12:30-1:30pm

Ensemble-building is a major component of this fun and educational introduction to singing! Given that singing is such a vulnerable form of performance, it is imperative that students feel safe and comfortable within the class. As such, this class incorporates plenty of group singing to build confidence. Students will work on musical theatre material and other popular songs. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

VOICE: SINGING LEVEL B • Ages 10-13
September 16, 2017–April 21, 2018 (24 classes) • $395
Saturday 1:45-3:15pm

Developing a deeper sense of confidence in their voices and capabilities, students practice ensemble and solo work. Increasing vocal range and exploring musical dynamics, this class provides a safe environment for exploration. Students will discover self-empowerment through sharing their voices. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class. 

VOICE: SINGING LEVEL C • Ages 13-18
September 16, 2017–April 21, 2018 (24 classes) • $400
Saturday 3:30-5:00pm

This class allows for a deeper focus on solo exploration (previous singing experience is required). Attention is given to individual development while building an ensemble repertoire from musicals and popular music. Vocal technique and understanding of breath are deepened as students develop a sense of ownership of their voices and abilities. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.


VOICE: SPEECH 
 

VOICE: SPEECH LEVEL A • Ages 8-10
September 18, 2017–April 16, 2018 (24 classes) • $340
Monday 4:00-5:00pm

Our youngest speech class focuses on creating a safe environment to ignite students’ vocal exploration. Students get comfortable sharing their ideas, and practice making contact with their audience as they speak. Working as an ensemble, students play within poetry, stories, and simple speech-making. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

VOICE: SPEECH LEVEL B1 • Ages 10-13
September 18, 2017–April 16, 2018 (24 classes) • $395
Monday 5:15-6:45pm

Going deeper into the practice of speaking, this class allows for more individual attention to presence, freedom of expression, and vocal clarity. Students build confidence as they develop vocal techniques and understanding of breath, through story and speech-making. Their ability to share ideas and thoughts clearly is enhanced, as they mature in their individual and group projects. This class culminates in an informal in-studio presentation during the last class.

VOICE: SPEECH LEVEL B2 • Ages 10-13
September 18, 2017–April 16, 2018 (24 classes) • $395
Monday 7:00-8:30pm

VOICE: SPEECH PRIVATE LESSONS • Ages 8-18

$720 (half hour) • $1440 (full hour)
Private Speech Lessons offer students the opportunity to advance their skills through a customised curriculum created with their instructor. Classes are structured to address each individual’s specific strengths and areas to grow, providing a focus unique to the student.

Once your payment is processed, you will be sent a registration form to fill out and submit for your application to be complete.

Registration Policy:

  • A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required to secure the student’s place in programs.
  • Payment for year-long classes can be made in full upon registration, or in no more than three postdated installments. Please call 604.270.1812 for installment details.
  • Final payment for year-long classes is due on or before: October 6, 2017. Fee processed upon acceptance of student into program.
  • A $25 fee will be charged for NSF cheques.
  • Registrations are non-transferable between individuals.  

Refund Policy:

  • Refunds for year-long classes are only issued until October 6, 2017; however, your $100 deposit is non-refundable.
  • No refunds for year-long classes after October 6, 2017.
  • Gateway Academy reserves the right to cancel any class due to low enrolment, or other situations which may be beyond our control. If we cancel a class, a full refund will be issued.
